Sister Laura Swan is a member of St. Placid Priory, located in the Pacific Northwest. She is a voracious reader of diverse material, who does not apologize for the stacks of books in her bedroom and office. She is passionate about recovering the stories of women long ignored, women who made significant contributions to culture and spirituality, and making their contributions known to a broader reading audience. Her intent is to restore women to the stories being told. While sharing what she's learned through public speaking engagements, she has also published several nonfiction books on important women's movements, listed on the Books page.
Besides several nonfiction projects under construction, Sister Laura has recently released her first novel, The Hannah Document. She has also revised and expanded her previous work, Engaging Benedict: What the Rule Can Teach Us Today, at the request of Oblates.
Sister Laura's professional life is rich and varied. Sometimes, she teaches at a nearby university - where the majority of students are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). She facilitates workshops and retreats, meets with wonderful people for spiritual companioning, and maintains her community's archives. In her “spare” time, she spoils her grandnieces and nephews (with lots of books!).
Sister Laura is a member of The Puget Sound Writers Guild
